Storms, heat, cyclone warnings, floods. This can only mean one thing. Summer is nearly here and the barra fishing is just starting to heat up! Along with summer comes the cricket and as soon as the first test at the Gabba kicks off, we know what happens next……

Christmas

So as it is getting closer to Christmas, (Believe it or not I was in Big W last week and they already had the decoration out) I though I would throw some ideas out there as to what you could buy the barramundi fishing enthusiast in your family. Kids I hope you are reading this and taking notes!

So let’s kick of with some idea’s….

Lures

They say most lures catch more fisherman than they do fish! but who are they anyway? Why don’t they get back in their office’s, mind their own business and let us get on with the serious work of fishing! I was looking through the latest barra, bass and bream and came across these little beauties the other day.

These spin shad lures from Sebile that imitate a vulnerable bait fish, look like the go to me! => Sebile Lures

Also synonymous with Darwin, barramundi and lures of course is Reidy’s their new web site is here =>Reidy’s Lures

Darwin Barramundi Fishing Charter

Now for those with a little more cash to spend that are really looking to spoil the family’s fishing enthusiast, what could be better than a trip to the Barra capital of Australia Darwin? There is something about having to dodge crocodiles to bag that 1 meter plus beauty that you really need to go to Darwin to experience. Local knowledge is the key to most fishing, so here is a couple of great option’s for a Darwin Barramundi Fishing Charter.

Two options that stick out for me going by the testimonial’s on their web sites are….

Phil’s affordable barra tours

Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge

Be sure to come back next week and we will have a look at some boats and rods!

Cheers Beanie

A ‘miner’ break at Lake Monduran

Queensland’s Lake Monduran was thrown into the world spotlight in December last year when a record barramundi was pulled from its waters.

Fishing from his kayak, Denis Harrold landed the 44.6kg fish, surpassing the previous world record of 37.85 kilograms, held since 1999.

Lake Monduran Holiday Park manager Rob Howell said there were still plenty of monster fish in the lake.

“Lake Monduran has always been known as a great barramundi fishing spot,” he said.

“But this record catch last year really put us on the world stage. It’s firmly entrenched us in fishing history and shows we are Australia’s top barra spot. There are still plenty of giants out there – catching them is the hard part!”

Lake Monduran Holiday Park is an ideal spot for a quick mid-week break. It sits right on the lake, with a holiday house, cabins or camp sites to choose from.

Hire a big barra boat or book a professional charter. Barramundi is the lake’s staple, but it is also stocked with Australian bass, golden perch, saratoga and silver perch.

For a quieter stay, you might enjoy a bush walk on the many tracks surrounding the park or simply sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet with a good book and a cold beer.

The park features a fish cleaning table, picnic areas, electric BBQs, modern amenities, camp kitchens and an onsite kiosk. They even sell bait, tackle, ice and gas. You can catch up on your emails with their free wireless internet, but don’t forget to bring your laptop.

Whether you’re after water views or a bush setting, a true camping experience or a little more comfort in the cabins, Lake Monduran offers something for everyone.

The park is located in the heart of the Wild Scotsman country, between Childers and Miriamvale and one hour west of Bundaberg in the town of Gin Gin.

It is part of Escape2 Holiday Parks and Resorts, a group of 13 unique properties across five Australian states.

Their claim is that they combine fantastic outdoor environments with best in class hospitality and modern amenities, making it easy to experience the simple pleasures of the great outdoors. This couldn’t be more true at Lake Monduran Holiday Park.

Over the previous year Queensland dams have undergone a complete refurbishment. By saying this I mean they have all had a much needed flush of fresh water and are all at 100 per cent capacity.

Lake Monduran is no exception, eight months after the flooding we are still seeing surrounding creeks and rivers that enter the dam trickle with crystal clear water bringing with a new lease of life. The country side around the lake is blossoming with birdlife, wildlife and native flora/fauna whilst under the water line there has been another transformation with an explosion of baitfish, newly formed weed beds and lily pads. Our native freshwater species need running freshwater to spawn and they’ve done exactly that.

We have had some miss calculated rumours of our lake losing all of our Barra over the dam wall, the truth of the matter is that only a small percentage has left the dam to head to the sea as their natural spawning instinct tells them it’s time whilst the majority will head towards the flowing water.

Over the past year we have had ongoing meetings with people in the marine industry who are experts on Barra migratory patterns and the conclusive outcome is that we did lose an estimated 15000 barra. So let’s put this into perspective when we take into consideration that the Monduran Anglers and Stocking Association (MASA) have stocked 1.5 million Barra over the previous 15 years there are still a massive amount of Barra in the lake

With the warmer weather on the approach the Barra will start to get active and feeding patterns will soon be predictable. As usual these fish will feed along windward banks, points and big shallow bays with established weed beds. The key to fishing successfully for Barra is persistence, stealth, variable lure presentation and a wide range of lures.

Water temperature is another major asset when finding fish, the warmer the water the more active the fish will be. If the fish are there and you can’t get them to bite vary your technique and lure selection and if you still can’t get them to bite leave the area and return again and again as it might be just a bite time that will turn them on.

Hundreds of people are caught up in boating accidents each year; as a result of alcohol use, overload, faulty personal floatation devices which lead to drowning and other serious injuries and at times fatal accidents. Here in comes the task of educating the recreational boaters about boating safety.

It is important to stay safe on water. You might have been fishing for what seems like forever, and so far you have managed to stay safe while on fishing trips! So why do you suddenly need to be aware of the safety precautions?

Safety is something none of us would like to compromise on. No matter what, it is imperative to keep yourself safe while you are out there in the water. There is no harm in having fun responsibly. Here are some simple safety tips when you are boating and fishing-

Wearing a life jacket or a personal floatation device when fishing from a boat is absolutely necessary. Even if you are an excellent swimmer, you need to put on a life jacket.

If you are fishing in water with strong currents, a life jacket is a must. Be careful before going wading in the water.

Take a partner along with you when you are going fishing. Along with a companion, you have each other in case something goes wrong.

Wearing a sun block, carrying a bug spray is important. You don’t want to get all sun burnt while you are sitting for hours waiting for a fish to hook. You need to be comfortable.

The hooks at the end of the line are very sharp, be careful to handle them with caution. Make sure there is no one behind you when you are casting. Avoid holding the fish you have caught near where it is hooked; you could get hurt if the fish wriggles the wrong way.

Hats and sunglasses will not only help you see in the water, spot fish and protect you from the sun, but keep you safe from other angler’s hooks.

Keep a first aid in the boat. Bandages, antiseptic crèmes or lotion, pain reliever, anti-inflammatory medication.

You don’t drink and drive, then why drink and drive your boat? Alcohol strengthens the effects of sun, wind fatigue, and affects balance, reaction time and judgments.

Always keep a check on the weather before going out boating or fishing. Check for radio and TV forecasts for the latest info. If there is a sudden change in the weather, it is better to stay off water.

Do not overload your boat. This not only includes the number of passengers, but also the weight of the fishing gear.

It is a good idea to take some boating safety course. This will not only help you if your boat capsizes but in case you need to rescue some one else. Being prepared, aware and educated for every circumstance that might arise.

Obey all the boating rules. There would be other boaters and swimmers around; be watchful of them.

Yes, most of us aware of these fishing and boating safety tips but how many of us honestly follow these? We have assumed that since we are fishing for so long, and never have we been in any unpleasant situations, nothing will happen in the future as well. But no fish is worth your life.

The boys describe their show as "A fishing show that dispenses precious drops of good angling oil"

As this is the first post for the new year, I have been looking everywhere to find something unique to kick off with.

Today I found it in the Tales from the Tinnie

Three lads Tim, Rob and Morgan that are mad keen about Darwin Barramundi Fishing, as well as any other fishing in the Northern Territory.

The boys describe their show as “A fishing show that dispenses precious drops of good angling oil”

They are running what they call the greatest fishing competition ever!!!

Check out their video below and they are on facebook as well click here for their fanpage.

Get over and check them out.
And I am trying to get them here for an interview on the barramundi fishing blog, to get some of their best barramundi fishing tips out of them!!!

Cheers Barra Beanie
