As this is the first post for the new year, I have been looking everywhere to find something unique to kick off with.

Today I found it in the Tales from the Tinnie

Three lads Tim, Rob and Morgan that are mad keen about Darwin Barramundi Fishing, as well as any other fishing in the Northern Territory.

The boys describe their show as “A fishing show that dispenses precious drops of good angling oil”

They are running what they call the greatest fishing competition  ever!!!

The barramundi fishing blog is going to become, alot more interactive in the coming weeks.

To kick things off I will be loading up some reviews, of essential and innovative barramundi fishing equipment.

Keep a close eye out because, as well as video I will be adding audio to the site.

The aim is to interview as many expert barra fishing experts as possible.

To see what great tips we can come up with.

So you have saved up booked your holiday to the Northern Territory for the barramundi fishing trip of a life time. The mission to catch the huge barramundi, that you have been dreaming of catching for years. You may even feel exceptionally confident of easily bagging your prized barramundi, since you are proficient at catching them in your local dam.

The main problems you are faced with when away on a fishing holiday are:

No1: unless you have an extended amount of time to work out the local conditions for barramundi fishing, you may struggle to bag that huge barramundi with your name written all over it.

No 2: It’s unlikely you will have your best fishing gear with you when you are away on holidays.

The last thing you want to have happen is to hook up the barramundi of a life time only to lose it before you get it in because the gear you where using wasn’t up to the job.

The easiest and quickest way to catch the prized barramundi is to go on a charter or with someone with exceptional local knowledge. If you are unsure which fishing guide to use I would suggest you head to the local pub and ask a few of the patron’s. You will very quickly be told in no uncertain terms, which are the best guide’s to go with.

The advantages of local knowledge are many, you can’t beat the knowledge of someone who fishes the area regularly. They know all the tips and tricks, which bait or lures to use, which tides to fish, what gear is required, what parts of the river or lake produce the quality fish, the list goes on and on.

Because the elements are so dramatically different between say Lake Awoonga near Gladstone and the Daly river in the Northern Territory. If you are used to fishing in Lake Awoonga you can’t expect to just turn up at the Daly river, go barramundi fishing and achieve the same results you are use to getting using the same gear and tactics and visa versa.

To me anyway money spent on a decent barramundi fishing charter is money well spent when you come home with the pictures of the huge barramundi of a lifetime that the charter operator hooked you up with.

The proof is in the pudding I suppose the picture below is of one of the guys I worked with on the Darwin LNG project. Having a look at the size of the barramundi he is holding do you think he was glad that he decided to go with a local charter??

I thought we would push the envelope, and take a look at fly fishing for barramundi.

I went down to catch up with the boys at Tie ‘N’ Fly Outfitters, at Buddina Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

Capt Gavin Platz was very helpful and spent quite a bit if time, explaining the basics of fly fishing to me as I am just a novice.

Gavin recommended two particular salt water flies for barramundi fishing.

There is a load of great info on Gavin’s site, even an online shop where you can puchase, fly tying kits. As well as everything else you need for fly fishing.

Capt Gavin Platz also runs a beginner fly fishing course, with the upcoming dates being the 3rd of October and the 26th of November.

As to what exactly a barramundi fishing maniac Father might want!!

The first thing that came in to my head was a Darwin barramundi fishing trip.

Yeah right I hear you say it’s too late to organize that , well there is always Father’s day again next year.

Christmas isn’t too far away either.

Hint hint kids are you getting this.

Anyway whether you Dad can go on a Darwin barramundi fishing trip, now or in the future is irrelevant.

The main thing is he can at least dream about it.

The answer is yes. At the Suncoast Barra fishing park.

The Suncoast barra fishing park offers both catch and release, and you are also able to take your prized barramundi home for dinner if you wish.

There are three lakes to chose from Barra Creek, The big boys pond and the mixed species pond.

And the added advantage is you don’t have to stress about the kids, getting eaten by a swamp dog whilst you are barramunfi fishing!!!

So make sure your next holiday is to my backyard the Sunshine Coast, where you can catch some great waves and a Barramundi!!!

The cover story shows a huge barramundi (125cm long, 33-35 kgs’s) caught by Michael Kowalski, on a Jason Wilhelm charter on Lake Monduran in Central Queensland.

The boys said that the fish was so big, that it took two of Michaels mates. To lift it up to him so that he could get a photo.

This horse sized barramundi was then quickly released, swimming off quickly none the worse for wear.

The magazine also has some great pictures and stories, from this years barra nationals. So be sure you grab a copy next time you are in the newsagents.

I have to admit that I also was falsely led to believe this urban myth as well. That was until I read an article written by Jason Wilhelm of Barra Madness.

In the article Jason detailed how he caught over 100 meter plus barramundi, during the winter months in Lake Awoonga near Gladstone.
